Katala, a calm faced woman standing in front of a stone wall in which three arches are held up by black pillars. Her brown hair is held back from her face by a reflective band around her brow, and falls down to her shoulders. She wears kimono of shiny salmon pink fabric wrapped from right to left, with wide sleeves, a wide orange obi, and a dark underlayer beneath the V of the collar. A chandelier is visible just behind her head and a shield is mounted on the wall to the right.

Katala in the Palace at Krondor.

Katala is a Midkemian immigrant from Kelewan in Betrayal at Krondor and Return to Krondor. She first appears in Chapter 2.

Overview[]

Katala is married to Pug and is the mother of their son William conDoin and their adopted daughter Gamina. She normally lives at Stardock with her family, but can be encountered at the Palace.

Chapter 2[]

Katala greets James when he is ready to leave for Romney. She tells him that Pug and Makala went out to discuss magic.

Gamina
Asked by James when he can meet Gamina, Katala says that her daughter probably went after Pug to listen in on the discussions about magic.
Magic Supplies
She mentions the Stardock Annex at Sarth, pointing out that it is not affiliated to Stardock. She also mentions Dabeh north of Romney, who buys from the Academy of Magic.
Message (upon returning after leaving Krondor)
James asks Katala to let Prince Arutha know that they have not yet reached the Black Sheep Tavern, but will send him word as soon as possible.

Chapter 3[]

Murder
James muses that if Arutha is absent, he "must have already begun." Without explaining, he asks Katala to let Arutha know that the Romney party was cancelled due to the host's illness; they are now looking for his escaped pet parakeet, and will meet him for tea at mother's as soon as they find the perch.
News
Katala recounts that some of the ports are experiencing an outbreak of Quegian Fever, and the Temple of Sung has sent priests to deal with any cases there. While the palace guards have been informed to keep watch for anyone who seems to be experiencing delusions, the disease is expected to be confined to areas north of Krondor.

Chapter 6[]

While in his meditation tower before disappearing, Pug mulls over a ruined vacation which he had intended to take with Katala and Gamina in Krondor.

In the Palace, Katala relates finding a cryptic message, "The Book of Macros," burnt into the wall in Pug's tower after being unable to locate him or Gamina. She believes it would be impossible for even Pug to contact Macros, who left behind only his vast library on Sorcerer's Isle when he departed from Midkemia, and cannot be certain that the message refers to any of its volumes, the bulk of which have been moved to Stardock or lent to scribes for cataloging and transcription.

When asked about anything unusual Pug might have done before disappearing, Katala notes that he has seemed agitated for some time, and that about a month ago, during a stroll in the gardens outside the palace, he suddenly halted near a sewer grate and murmured an unexplained remark about not all of the sheep being in their fold.

After the conversation, Katala heads to Stardock to look for evidence of the Book of Macros.

Manual[]

The game manual describes Katala as intelligent, tactful, and with a calm nature which commands the utmost respect and affection from the diverse community of magic users and their families in which she has become a natural leader. She is in her mid-thirties, a striking woman with dark hair and large dark eyes. Pug met and fell in love with Katala during his enslavement on Kelewan, but was separated from her when the Assembly of Magicians siezed him for training in the Greater Path. The two reconnected and were wed years later.

Krondor: The Betrayal[]

Katala's Tsurani accent is not quite the same as that of Sumani and other Tsurani in Yabon.[1]

Trivia[]

If the party does not revisit Katala during Chapter 2, the "Message" dialog appears in Chapter 3, even though the party begins the chapter at the Black Sheep.
