Seigneur Locklear.

Seigneur Locklear, a human noble of the Kingdom of the Isles, is one of the six player characters in Betrayal at Krondor. He is a party member in Chapters 1, 5, and 7, and appears briefly at the beginning of Chapter 9.

Background[]

The youngest son of the Baron of Land's End, Seigneur Locklear has been the constant friend of Jimmy the Hand since they were boys. His mind is razor sharp; an attribute that has made him a valuable asset to Krondor. Although physically slower than Jimmy, he can usually defeat him in rapier duels because of his shrewd combat strategies. Jimmy also has taught him some tricks, like Lockpicking, and showed him around the Thieves' Highway.

Locklear sports a healthy tan year round as he often vacations near his father at Land's End. He is one of the finest swordsmen in Midkemia. One of the most honored nobles at Krondor, he is a peer of the royal family.

He and the other Krondorian squires greatly admired Isaac and considered it a tragedy when Isaac was expelled from the court.

Serving Prince Arutha conDoin, he achieved great notoriety, and was decorated for his service during the Great Rising, most notably at the battles of Armengar and Sethanon. He was deeply scarred when a troll killed his first love, Bronwyn Alpress, at Armengar. Nonetheless, an incident at the Battle of Sethanon, during which Dubal An Loch rescued him from a cellar where he was sheltering with a group of women, granted him a reputation as a ladies' man. He has also spent some time with the soldiers of the Shamata Garrison and played pokiir there (although he is more familiar with the game of pashawa).

During peacetime, Locklear left Arutha's court to study under Captain Moyiet, expecting a few simple months of soldiering before returning home or to Krondor.

In the ninth year of the reign of King Lyam I, ten years after the Great Rising, Locklear was dispatched to a northern garrison to investigate reports of a conflict raging among the moredhel of the Northlands. Shortly after his arrival his escort was attacked by moredhel. Cut off from his companions, he saw a moredhel attacking someone; he killed the aggressor to save the poor man's life, only to discover that he was a half-moredhel, Gorath.

Learning from Gorath that Murmandamus's battle standards had been raised over Sar-Sargoth and moredhel troops were mustering to attack the Kingdom, Locklear decided to escort him to Krondor to testify before the Prince. On their way from the Northlands they passed through the Inclindel, stalked by moredhel assassins and attacked twice.

Between Yabon and LaMut, they encountered Owyn Beleforte, who offered to tend to Locklear's wounds.

Starting Stats[]

Of those who start the journey in Chapter 1, Locklear has the highest starting Defense and Lockpick Skills, and is tied with Owyn for both the lowest starting Stamina, though his higher Health gives him a better Health/Stamina total, and the highest starting Speed. He has the lowest starting Accy: Crossbow and Stealth Skills of any player character, but the highest Accy: Melee Skill.[1] As the party's makeup changes over time, either he or James can benefit from practicing their Barding, Haggling, Armorcraft, and Weaponcraft Skills in anticipation for the stages where they part ways with Gorath and Owyn.

Prologue[]

As Owyn works to heal Locklear, a third assassin infiltrates their camp and is detected and strangled by Gorath. Locklear decides to remove Gorath's chains for the party's safety, trusting in his commitment to their shared mission, and forces Owyn to join them as his squire to prevent him from disclosing information about their journey.

Chapter 1[]

If the party chooses to take an indirect route to Krondor, Locklear rationalizes their decision as a way to avoid assassins who would expect them to head directly there. If they travel through Kenting Rush after visiting Cavall Keep, he muses wearily about the past several months of "ambling around the Kingdom and the Northlands" on errands he does not expect to be of much value to Prince Arutha, rather than returning home or to Krondor after a few months of soldiering under Captain Moyiet.

Upon reaching Krondor, the party is told by a young watchman of the Krondorian Lancers that the Palace gate mechanism has been broken for three days; that an important meeting between Prince Arutha, Pug, and Makala cannot be interrupted; and that Locklear's old friend Seigneur James has been missing for two days. Locklear, suspecting that the gate was sabotaged to prevent the party from entering the Palace unobserved, resolves to sneak in through the Thieves' Highway, the secret route James had used. A young Mocker guarding the entrance scoffs at Locklear's claim of friendship with the legendary Jimmy the Hand, but allows the party passage.

After several skirmishes with enemies wearing Nighthawk gear, the party runs into James, who greets his old friend Locky effusively, mocks his new hair color, and clarifies that the Nighthawks roaming the Thieves' Highway are imposters hoping to cause trouble for the Mockers. James gives Locklear the Royal Key of Krondor with which to end the chapter by unlocking the grate to the Palace.

Chapter 2[]

When retrieving items from the inventory room at the Palace, James sighs at Locklear's disorganized method of storing belongings.

Nia Lycrow asks the party to tell Locklear hello from her if they should meet him on their travels.

Manual[]

The manual notes that during the ten years of peacetime after the Riftwar, Locklear briefly entered military service under Baron Moyiet, a daring garrison leader with an unforgiving eye on moredhel activities.
